SkinVive by Juvederm: Lasting Glow and Hydration

Technology has increased rapidly over the last decade, and it's not just with machines. The beauty industry has also seen incredible technological advances, many of which are injectables. In this blog, you'll learn about SkinVive by Juvederm and how it hydrates facial skin and gives you a beautiful glow.

The "Dehydration" Dilemma

Did you know that dehydrated skin is a condition, not a skin type? It may come as a surprise, but even oily skin can be dehydrated. A common misconception is that dry skin equals dehydration. But that's not the case.

Here's the difference:

Dry skin occurs because of lack of oil. Dehydrated skin is a result of lack of water. When your skin is dehydrated, it's literally thirsty. Where most people go wrong is trying to treat both conditions the same way.

There are, of course, many services and products that are designed to repair or hydrate your skin. The trick is to pick the right one and avoid some of the common pitfalls that lead to wasted time and money and even making the very skin condition you're trying to treat worse.

One of the biggest pitfalls is product selection.

The Serum Graveyard: Where Skin Care Products Go Wrong

Have you gone through product after product and hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars a year, in an effort to hydrate your face and get that "glow" with little to no results? Or gone through moisturizer after moisturizer to repair dry skin?

The truth is, most of these products end up in what's called the serum graveyard. And this graveyard is full of half-used or seemingly ineffective products.

The thing is, some of the products that end up in the "graveyard" aren't actually ineffective. It's possible it's because of improper use or because you're attempting to treat a symptom with the wrong thing.

But there's another cause that explains why many skin care products miss the mark.

That's because most skin products can't penetrate the skin's protective barrier. Why? Because the skin's job is to limit absorption. So really, your skin is often fighting against your products!

Tip: To enhance product absorption, apply moisturizers and serums on damp skin, unless specifically instructed not to.

Another reason hydrators in particular fail is due to dead skin buildup and damaged skin. Dead skin cell buildup prevents products from absorbing into the skin, while damaged skin can't retain moisture.

How you use the product also makes a major difference. Frequency matters. Amount matters. That information isn't thrown on the bottle to take up space. If you use less than the directed amount or use the product less frequently, you might be making it last a little longer, but you're also cutting the effectiveness in half, or more. Using more than what is needed isn't helping either. It just wastes your hard-earned money.

Luckily, there's a solution that solves the dehydration and helps the dry skin dilemma while also enhancing the effectiveness of topical products:

SkinVive injections.

The Dehydration Solution: SkinVive

Think of SkinVive by Juvederm as a superhero for skincare. It's the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid (HA) microdroplet injectable for enhancing skin quality. And these microdroplets of HA pack a serious punch!

What is Hyaluronic Acid (HA)?

HA is a natural substance found in skin and body tissue. Imagine hyaluronic acid as an internal sponge. It soaks up lots of water and aids in the hydration of your joints and skin.

As you age, though, your body makes less hyaluronic acid (because of course it does🙄). And it's the slowdown in HA production that leads to signs of aging and dry skin. Luckily, we have science and now have products with hyaluronic acid that can help our skin absorb more water and improve hydration.

But remember: Your skin actively tries to fight the products you put on it as a defense mechanism. And this is why it can seem like even products with HA don't work, and also where SkinVive shines.

The Science of Deep Hydration

SkinVive injections work at the dermal level by injecting microdroplets of HA directly into the middle layer of the skin (dermis). These microdroplets help increase aquaporin-3 (AQP3), a protein responsible for transporting water into your cells. Studies have shown that a reduction in AQP31 plays a significant role in aging and the effects of sun exposure on skin.

Because SkinVive penetrates the dermis, it's much more effective at plumping the skin and improving its elasticity than any at-home product you could buy. In fact, studies have proven SkinVive to increase the smoothness of cheeks and increase hydration within the skin.

As much as 58% of SkinVive patients saw improvements in the appearance of fine lines, and 74% reported glowing skin within a month of treatment and through month six.2

Where SkinVive really shines is that after your treatment, your skin products and other facial services will be even more effective. In fact, stepping up your skin care regimen is highly advisable after your treatment, as it'll help enhance your results and give you the best bang for your buck for the SkinVive treatment itself and other products and services.

Key Benefits of SkinVive: A Hidden Gem in the Injectable Market

SkinVive may be one of the most underutilized injectables simply because many people don't understand what it does. It's highly effective, long-lasting, well tolerated, and offers incredible value well worth the price tag.

It gives your skin a literal hydration boost, as the microdroplets are injected into the dermis, providing direct, deep moisturization where your skin needs it most. Because of this, SkinVive tackles several common skin issues.

Smooths and Softens Skin and Adds Radiance

A big trend right now is the "glass skin" look. It's all about smoothness and glowing, healthy skin. SkinVive really delivers by enhancing the skin's radiance. The hyaluronic acid smooths texture, plumps the skin, and leaves a lasting dewy glow. As it hydrates, it also softens and refreshes the skin.

Improves the Appearance of Fine Lines

If you're looking for a way to reduce fine lines and light wrinkles, SkinVive can help with that too. This injection stimulates collagen and naturally smooths and plumps the skin, which in turn minimizes fine lines. It also helps smooth crepey or depleted skin textures.

Refreshes Dull, Tired Looking Skin

SkinVive is excellent for rejuvenating dull skin, improving overall skin quality, and adding intense hydration to the skin.

For more pronounced, targeted wrinkle treatments, we recommend Botox or VirtueRF microneedling, which specifically targets these concerns by area.

Fast and Lasting Results

While it's possible to see a noticeable improvement in hydration and glow immediately after your appointment, you'll most likely see full results between two and four weeks. SkinVive treatments typically last up to six months, so most people only need treatment twice a year.

SkinVive vs. Traditional Fillers

A common fear and misconception many people have about SkinVive is that they think it works like other injectables. However, SkinVive is in a class all its own. It's essentially an injectable moisturizer and skin rejuvenation treatment. Unlike dermal fillers and botulinum toxins like Botox, it does not alter your face shape in any way.

The Cost of SkinVive Injections vs Topical Treatments

Costs for SkinVive vary based on provider and geographical location. At Alkali, SkinVive starts at $425 per syringe. What's amazing about this injection is that a little really does go a very long way. It's not like your injector's just injecting large amounts of substance into your face. Rather, they are using controlled microinjections strategically, where you need it most. The average full treatment is just two syringes.

The initial ticket price is high, but considering SkinVive lasts up to six months, it ends up balancing out. Depending on your habits, it can also end up being even slightly cheaper. SkinVive can also help increase the performance of topical products because it corrects your skin's internal moisture balance.

According to studies, women spend approximately $600 a year on skin care products.3 This already exceeds the cost of the average single SkinVive syringe and includes products that wind up in the serum graveyard! Moisturizing and anti-aging products top the list of most bought products, followed closely by serums and treatments3. It's even higher for those buying luxury skin care, which can range from $35 to $500 per item.

So, when you put it into perspective, SkinVive provides excellent benefit to value per year.

Does SkinVive replace the need for other skin care products? No. And if anyone says it does, that should give you pause. But it does help you slim down your usage and get greater benefits from the products you do use.

Personal SkinVive Experiences From Alkali

Alkali's owner and CEO Amber Woodall doesn't offer services she wouldn't feel confident about getting herself. Several Alkali staff members get SkinVive. Because we value transparency and wanted to provide a deeper perspective on what to expect, Amber and Wren, Alkali's salon manager, graciously gave me a rundown of their experiences. Wren even filmed her most recent service.

Wren's SkinVive Experience [With Video]

If SkinVive has a biggest fan, it's probably Wren. She swears by this treatment. While all the microinjections can sound and look intimidating, she can vouch for a pain-free experience. Here's why she loves SkinVive and how she feels during treatment in her own words:

"I’ve had SkinVive twice now, and it’s honestly one of my favorite injectable treatments because it doesn’t make you look different, it just makes your skin look healthier. My skin felt incredibly hydrated, smoother, and had this subtle glow that people noticed without being able to pinpoint why. I started seeing results within the first couple of weeks (I even left the house without makeup!), and they lasted about six months for me. If you’re looking for that “your skin, but better” effect, I can’t recommend it enough." - Wren Woodall, Salon Manager at Alkali

Amber's SkinVive Experience

Amber had a different experience during her SkinVive treatment. While she had great results, she experienced something called vasovagal, which is essentially a strong flight or fight response

"I had an unexpected and uncontrollable flight or fight response because of so many pricks. My body basically overreacted to the treatment, even though I wasn't in pain. Most people won't experience this, but I think it's important to share regardless. That said, my skin was beautiful for months after the treatment with no side effects. Even with the reaction, I will absolutely get SkinVive again. It was worth it!" - Amber Woodall, Owner & CEO at Alkali

SkinVive FAQ

Does SkinVive hurt more than Botox?

Many people are concerned about the multiple injections that come with SkinVive. At Alkali, we strive to make beauty as painless as possible. Just like our Botox treatments, SkinVive injections are administered with complimentary numbing to make the process as comfortable as possible.

Can I use SkinVive if I have active acne?

No. You should wait until your skin has cleared prior to receiving a SkinVive treatment. This includes active acne and other skin infections or issues. Also let your injector know of any known allergies or if you are on immune suppressants or blood thinners.

How many syringes of SkinVive do I actually need for full hydration?

This varies depending on the condition of your skin, but the average treatment requires two syringes.

Is there any downtime or "social downtime"?

Most people experience little to no downtime. It is possible to experience mild redness, minor swelling, or tiny bumps at injection sites, but these typically resolve within 24 hours
